Parents...
Guidelines to consider...
- Freshman don't play matches UNLESS parents are actively engaged in the arrangements.
- They tend not to listen to instructions about arrangements.
- Their not showing up means somebody else missed out on an opportunity to play.
January:
- One way to keep track of team and match information:
- Schedule conditioning for the week or two before the February practices start.
- THS black top or MU.
- Exercise ladders, hurdles, etc.
- Meet AD at the Athletics room and grab the gear to take inventory of it.
- Player needs
- Athletic packet
- $200 donation per player donation request
- Reach out to Rich Hutchinson, President of RPTC
- request updated code for the court closet
- Combination of the court locker: 2683
- No storage of any equiptment in any shed please.
- I can spot 300 practice balls to begin the season. That equates to 50 balls per court, more than enough.
- SSU courts?

February:
- Fundraiser?

- Conditioning the week or two before practices start
- Get practices going
- Empty the court garbage cans once a week. Clean bags are in the court closet. Coordinate with RPTC president.
- Reach out to coaches
- Court Management
- This is the single biggest stress point of coaching...taking advantage of the courts we have, moving players around and sharing with the public.
- We technically have six courts, and easily use that many when available.
- Don't like to kick people off and also like to free ones up when people come looking.
- Tips I've learned...
- Communicate as early as possible with the President of the RP Tennis Club who manages the courts, not the city!
- Arrive early and spread gear and people out to take courts as quickly as possible.
- If people are on courts, introduce yourself and ask them what their plans are so you can work around them.
- Greet people and give them a heads-up about the schedule, especially the match schedule.
- KEY: Get to know the other coaches and regulars by being friendly and sharing!
- Sharing and giving up courts pays later when you may need to ask for space.
- Senior Gifts...
- Hats with names on the back?
- Other tennis gear?
- 2022: small succulents to take to school with them
- 2023: $50 gift cards for the Senior Disney trip (out of fund-raiser proceeds)
- Notes for CMCs
- Conditioning
- Consistency for doubles would be very helpful
March:
- Match rules:
- Matches - 3 singles, 2 doubles
- Win 2 out of 3 sets or 1 pro-set to 8 as agreed upon at the start
- Sets to 6 games - win by 2 - switch sides at odd total games
- Tiebreaker at 6-6 - points to 7 - win by 2 - switch sides at 6 total points
- If playing 2 of 3 sets, if agree upon, 3rd set can be to 3 games - win by 2 - tiebreaker at 3-3
- No Ad scoring - next point after Deuce wins game - returner chooses side to receive serve
- Players are responsible for keeping score and the receiver/returner is responsible for out/fault calls
- Don't expect to reschedule for lack of players unless both coaches agree
- 3 players = 3 singles
- 4 players = 2 singles and 1 doubles
- 5 players = 3 singles and 1 doubles
- 6 players = 2 singles and 2 doubles
- 7 players = 3 singles and 2 doubles

Some things that I've realized as I've been coaching...
- Tennis is a Gentlemen's / Lady's sport
- "Gentle"person means to make those around you comfortable.
- Girl from Victory Academy (with the dog for her blood-sugar) commented on how nice our players are.
- She specifically called out Kobe.
- But, that was reflected on ALL of us!
- Proof that tennis is a team sport.
- Swearing...others don't want to hear it.
- Being loud & obnoxious...even if you are right, you don't need to be obnoxious
- Ex: Guy complaining about a dog being on the court.
- Since tennis is a team sport...
- Support your team and stick around and watch to the end.
- Ex: Colton's 1:40 match that was twice as long as everybody else's!
What we did well...
- Drills
- Ball-machine and cycling players through various drills
- ground strokes
- net play (ball on oscillation) with people trying to return the kill shots
- Serving
- catching the ball against the fence
- Managing courts
- Two courts side-by-side
- One is for drills
- Other is for King-of-the-Court if too much for doubles
- Other courts are for matches
- 30-45 minutes on average for a pro-set
- Matches
- 1st match against a team, play based on our ranking
- 2nd match, change the line-up to match the other team's ability assuming we win the 1st
Need to do better...
- Identify desires up front
- PE or competitive?
- Set the expectations for each
- Competitive
- Be a team
- PE
- Won't get the focus
- 75% of practices to get credit
- Easier to equate it to a certain number of hours because of matches
- Show up, and on time, unless you tell me you aren't coming
- Matches
- Warm-up routine as a team
- Support the teammates and watch the matches still going on
- Prepare for CMCs earlier
- Pick the doubles and have them always play together
- Conditioning
