Where did Florence go?
Perspectives from everyone Florence interacted with in Lubbock:
- Her friend Peggy stops by her apartment because she isn't answering her phone. After repeated attempts to knock on her door, she finally convinces the manager to let her in (she calls the police, but they can't help until she's been missing for 24 hours.)
- Her office begins talking when she doesn't show up for work the next morning (possible Monday if she left on a Friday).
- The Lyndsey movie theater staff recall her funny behavior the night before, dancing to some of the pop songs playing on the radio, watching a movie instead of working the concession stand and eating the candy.
- When the police accept that she is missing, they open a case and assign an officer to work on it. The officer begins questioning everyone she knew in Lubbock. He tries to find her parents, but discovers that her mother is in the sanitarium, her father works at a cotton gin in Lamesa and her brother is stationed in Germany.
- The officer tries to question Peggy, but she appears dismissive when he questions her. He is unaware that she discovered her letters to Shareef and is hiding the fact that she knows where Florence went.
- Peggy's husband is stationed in Italy. She has a newborn infant that she takes care of. The officer is sympathetic to the extent that he falls in love with her. In his attempts to talk to Peggy she eventually tells him to go talk to her father again.
- He goes to Lamesa, but doesn't find her father. He starts to ask around and end up talking to some of the locals.
