Adam's journey should parallel his entire life up until the moment he discovers the letters.  

The works of art and architecture represent the subtext of his struggle to free himself from the shackles of religion and his upbringing.  His biological and assumed parents represent the conflicting beliefs in his world.  Islam vs. Christianity.  As he journeys through Europe he begins to realize how the height of the Western World feeds off of its relationship with the East.
