April 5, 1969: Thanks to a cover profile in Rolling Stone, shoe salesman Lester Bangs bought MC5's debut album, Kick Out the Jams. He hated it—and wrote a letter to the magazine to recount his disgust. The editors were impressed with his zeal. On this day, they published his review of the album in their April issue.
