S is F
After a sleepless night with a colicky newborn, S decides to pay a visit to her friend F. When she arrives at F's house, she discovers that she is not answering her door nor has she gone to work (work out the details of this later). [Her best friend has left for good.] S is frantic because she fears the worst. and is in no condition to deal with the situation. Her newborn has been so colicky lately that she's lost a lot of sleep. Slept-walk into the eternal abyss. She immediately contacts the police. S wants the police to check all bus lines, flights and trains that have left Lubbock in the last day. The officer speaking with her informs her that he cannot file a missing persons report for another 24 hours and that she should probably contact her friends to see if she is with them.
S decides to go to the police department and ask for their help in person. Perhaps they'll believe her when she shows up with her baby in the carriage and they'll feel a bit guilty for not helping her over the phone. She meets officer X and retells the story over the phone. She also adds that F is a somnambulist, a sleep walker and that she may have wandered off in the middle of the night and may be hurt or stuck somewhere. Officer X asks S a few questions about herself and discovers that she's had a child for a few weeks now and her husband is serving overseas in Italy. Officer X, who could not serve in the military, is somewhat jealous of her husband, partially because he gets to serve his country, but also because he's grown enamored with S. Therefore it is no surprise that he shows an eagerness to help.
S tells Officer X that F worked the concession stand at the Lyndsey. He should check there first. [Find good reference to a film that would be showing] It was about 9 am now and the theater wouldn't open for a couple of hours.
S suddenly remembers where F was last night. She tells him to go to the club where the Beatniks hang out. F was there the previous evening for their open mic poetry reading. Perhaps she met a friend there who would know more. Officer X heads down to the club [need a good description here] and speaks with the owner. He tells Officer X that she was there last night. She was sad because she lost her voice while practicing her reading. He told her that Llano Estacado [a.k.a. Eduardo Lucero, a.k.a El] was there and offered to read it for her. The two were hitting it off quite nicely as she wrote notes in Spanish on napkins as he spoke to her.
Trying to remain under the radar for fear of getting in trouble with his superiors, Officer X decides not to check the bus lines, trains and flights leaving Lubbock. He would also need an official search warrant for her home, call records and bank account. Instead he heads to Eduardo's house to get more information. This was a bit tricky because Eduardo lived in the Hispanic parts of town (the bario officially) and they didn't trust the police [for obvious reasons].
