Ma Jian

Happy birthday, Ma Jian! When the Chinese author’s short story collection Stick Out Your Tongue was published in 1987, the Chinese government found it subversive and decided to ban his future work. Unfazed, he moved to Hong Kong, then returned to China to support pro-democracy activists in Tiananmen Square in 1989. His novel Beijing Coma is inspired by the events of that time, while Red Dust is a fictionalized account of his travels through China.
