About the College of Education at Texas Tech University

Our lovely Spanish Renaissance building was finished in the spring of 2002 at a cost of $18 million. This building is a part of the largest classroom space ever built on a public university campus in Texas, with a total of 91,000 square feet.

Dr. Stephanie Jones (Higher Education) says that the building "just makes one feel at home." We believe that this is true and that you will enjoy being a part of our family and our community.

The designated color for Education is baby blue; our building is our symbol; and our motto is Scholarship, Leadership, and Service.

Like every other building project on campus, a part of the funds raised for this magnificent building were used to construct Headwaters, a sculptural installation that reminds one of various metaphors about learning. The fountain gushes its clear water through the letters of the alphabet held in giant hands, perhaps those hands representing the hands of the teachers who take the alphabet and enable students to turning them into words creating new horizons, new birth, and new knowledge for themselves and others. Our grounds contain, in short, part of Texas Tech's public art display.

From Here, You Too Can Be a Professional Educator

If you choose to be a professional educator, you have come to the right place. You can become a teacher and teach all-level Art, Health, Music, Physical Education, Special Education or Technology Applications. You can prepare to be an Elementary, Middle Level or Secondary teacher, but you can also choose to be a counselor, principal, superintendent, reading specialist, a master reading teacher, etc. In addition to these certifications, you can earn additional certificates in Bilingual Education, English as a Second Language, Special Education or Visual Impairment, all being high need teaching areas. Katie L. Moreland, a May graduate of Texas Tech's College of Education, was awarded one of two state-wide awards for Student Teacher of the Year, a first for a Texas Tech student teacher from the College of Education. Each year, more than 6,000 students from Texas colleges of education complete student teaching.

In 2009, the College of Education had 723 Undergraduate, 676 Masters, and 251 Doctoral students.

The College is dedicated to making its community diverse. A 49.6% growth in diversity in the last five years means you are sure to find a community here.

You can be a part of student organizations in the College, such as the Texas State Teachers Association-Student Program, Kappa Delta Pi, the Education Graduate Student Organization, and others. You can enjoy the many student-centered events that we provide for you, such as the Student Awards Cookout, the Student Staff Thanksgiving Lunch, three Inductions of Professional Educators each year and various other special treats and awards.

You can join the Education Learning Community, which is across the street from the College of Education, in the Hulen Residence Hall. Being in the Community gives you a Co-ed experience by floor, provides you with specialized social and academic activities, and will enable you to gain a broad perspective of career opportunities available in education and create study groups with other education and certification students.
