Wanting a little restoration project to keep me busy during the Winter, I searched Craigslist for a 1983 Diamondback Silver Streak.
To my surprise, I found my childhood BMX bike for sale 44 miles away in Colorado Springs. It appeared the post was a few months old but I sent out the "I'm interested!" e-mail anyway. Luckily, the Owner replied within the hour, 'It's still for sale'.
It appears the Owner's kids did not take a liking to vintage BMX bikes as he did and he wanted the Silver Streak out of the garage. The bike originated from the South and had been 'updated' with some modern parts. After a bit of haggling, I loaded up the bruised and worn Silver Streak and took it home.
I stripped the bike down that evening and made a list of all the parts I had to find online. My goal was to restore the Silver Streak to my recollection of the day back in December of 1983 when my dear Grandma bought it for me for Christmas. While disassembling the bike, I noticed some parts were modified, not original, or were damaged from wear and tear. All the parts were placed in a box and set aside for reference only. During the initial clean-up, I found out a 20-inch BMX frame will fit in the dishwasher. (I recommend the Pots & Pans setting)
A few month later, the bike was completed and restored to the day my Grandma and I walked into the Schwinn shop in Morris, Illinois to purchased it.
Only one item remains - I'm still searching for the Diamondback pedals with the diamond cut-outs. If you know someone who can point me in the right direction, please let me know.
