What does the cigarette mean for Amina (and Omar)?

Amina will have a cigarette butt in her possession.  She found it while rummaging through her mother’s things.  It was in a box with a torn page of a photo.  The photo contains a man’s hand holding the cigarette before it was lit.  She’s not certain but believes that it’s not her father’s.  She is obsessed with finding it’s owner, but doesn’t know how to ask her mother.

The cigarette will serve as a device that bridges the gap (culture, gender, geographic, historical) between herself and Omar.  Her attempt to go back in time and find the “unspoken” cigarette will bring her to Omar who is also trying to find a cigarette (to smoke) - like his father.
