On December 6, 1933, US District Judge John M. Woolsey made the historic ruling that allowed James Joyce’s Ulysses to be published in the United States. The book had effectively been banned by customs officials for being obscene. Judge Woolsey, however, found that reading Joyce’s classic “did not tend to excite sexual impulses or lustful thoughts”. He instead described Ulysses as a “sincere and honest book” and “an amazing tour de force."
