Italo Svevo, born Aron Ettore Schmitz on December 19, 1861, was an Italian paint manufacturer and writer best known for his 1923 modernist masterpiece La Coscienza di Zeno (Zeno's Conscience or Confessions of Zeno). He became close friends with James Joyce when a then unknown Joyce gave Svevo English lessons in Trieste. The friendship inspired and encouraged both writers with Joyce later championing La Coscienza di Zeno and Svevo providing a model for Leopold Bloom, the protagonist of Joyce’s novel Ulysses.
