Thea Astley (born August 25, 1925) wrote fictional satirical accounts about small-town life in her native Australia. Human folly, human foibles—these are revealed in novels like Girl with a Monkey, A Descant for Gossips, A Kindness Cup, and An Item from the Late News. She won Australia’s prestigious Miles Franklin Literary Award four times in addition to numerous other prizes, including for her short story collection Hunting the Wild Pineapple.
