The designer of Brasilia speaks about fighting for a better world
Oscar Niemeyer, the designer of Brasilia, is almost 103 years old and still practices from his office in Rio de Janeiro. When asked about his favorite word “solidarity”, his response was:
“We have to be decent, fraternal, all that. The architect must think that the world has to be a better place, that we can end poverty. So it is important that the architect think not only of architecture but of how architecture can solve the problems of the world. The architect’s role is to fight for a better world, where he can produce an architecture that serves everyone and not just a group of privileged people.”
It’s clear that he applied this vision when designing Brasilia, regardless of it’s criticisms. The city that was dedicated to following the Athens’s Charter will continue to serve its residents for many years to come and remind the world that change can occur beneath one’s very own feet.

In sharing Oscar Niemeyer’s view about the “solidarity” associated with architect. I would like to meet him. The photo of him taken in 2008 and posted on Wikipedia indeed still looks very young and healthy. I also saw many video of him in You Tube. Yes, I agree that the architect should serve everyone and not just those privileged group of people! All the homeless people out there need a humanity value added architects! -

I find this post so inspiring, especially Oscar Niemeyer’s quote about how architecture and architects CAN change the world. It is also inspiring coming from a person who has lived a long life and is able to share his wisdom and experience with those who have yet to live and experience as much as he has. This post made me realize that even if we think we are doing something that can no way change the ways of the world or make it a better place, think again. If one person takes a step to make the world a better place, every single person who takes that step will join the others in making a big imprint to make the world a better place.

I also very much agree with Oscar Niemeyer. Architecture should be enjoyed by everyone, not just those who are privileged enough to do so. Architecture should also be something that everyone can admire as a beautiful piece of art in their town or city. Your status should not be a determining factor in whether or not you can enjoy a beautiful piece of architecture. People can also come together to enjoy these wonderful land marks and discuss creativeness of the architect.
