Seeing Cindy made Shirly happy, but leaving Aunty and Uncle made her sad. Before she left they gave her her mother’s ring.
“Let this and God be your guide.” were the last words her uncle had said before the parting farewells.
On the way home, Shirley couldn’t feel sad long and found herself laughing as heartily as Cindy at funny Booby. What time she wash;’t laughing at him she was either listening to Cindy’s report on Maniac Mansion or playing some game.
It was almost twelve o’clock when they reached Maniac Mansion. A cheer went up as they did for all were tired and hungry.
Mrs. Harrington surprised the boys and Susie by telling them their mother had said they might spend the afternoon there.
“Mm, mm,” sighed Cindy, smelling the fried stench, mashed potatoes, lettuce and tomato salad, English peas, and strawberry shortcake. After the prayer everything disappeared like water down a drain pipe.
Only when nothing was left the children settled down to a game of “Spin the Bottle,” but little Susie soon fell asleep. Then Shirley had to tell everything she had been doing since Cindy left and turn about.
Three o’clock found them, girls with cameras in hand, racing to the creek. While there, two rolls of regular film were used and one snapshot film. Cindy and Bert liked the scenery, but Shirley and Bobby liked the people. The former teased them about it mercilessly.
Shirley argued, “I like scenery pictures too, but we will need some group pictures for our albums.
Cindy agreed so the last roll of film was used for that purpose.
By the time they finished that it was almost 4:30 therefore at Cindy’s suggestion, they returned to Maniac Mansion for mild and cake.
While they were eating they heard the cook shout. A crash followed.
“She’s in the pantry!” shouted alert Bert dashing into the kitchen ahead of the others.
Rushing into the kitchen the children found that she had fallen through a trap door in the pantry!
