Concepcion’s song
What song is it? A Spanish version of ‘River of Memories’?
An old Mexican song about La Llorona?
Perhaps as she sings it, it calms Florence’s mother’s nerves. Brings her peace. Either because by listening to it she recalls a memory of when she was young. (Which is why she tried to teach it to her class). New teaching methods. Language through song...
When Concepcion sings it she realizes that she is getting through to them. But the future will not be an English speaking one. It will be a hybrid of Spanis-Mexican culture and words. Reinventing tradition and the past.
More on Concepción‘s song. While working in the cotton fields one day Concepción here’s a song being sung from the local school. It is Florence‘s mother trying to teach a group of Hispanic Mexican students English through the use of song. Concepción asks one of the other field workers, What is this song? The field worker replies is some stupid gringo white song. it’s a Christian song they want us to learn it. but they don’t know anything about our own songs. Maybe if she learned our songs, we would learn her song too.
