Happy birthday, Keri Hulme! When the New Zealand author submitted her first manuscript to publishing houses, most didn't know what to make of it. One rejection noted that the writing was very good, but that no one understood what it was about. Luckily, English publishing house Hodder & Stroughton gave it a chance. The novel went on to win the Booker Prize for Fiction in 1985.
