The former Florence is a metaphor for the past and and the future person she will become.  In that sense FOH is like a mirror.  Each story is a personification and parallel of the next chapter.  The story cycle works at a macro level as Florence reinvents herself (rebirth) thus starting from the beginning again when the novel is finished.  The story cycle also works as individual pieces to a whole.
