Element that binds Florence to life-cycle of cotton
In order to bind Florence's character and circumstances that surround her to the life-cycle of the cotton crop that is constantly growing around her (taken for granted by her), there must exist an element that continuously co-exists between the domains of the two. A daily newspaper column that is both funny, witty educational and agricultural in nature could serve as that element. It might be called "Dear Eli" (as in Eli Whitney) or "Weevil's Wisdom" and would offer facts for younger reader's about the cotton industry.
Florence initally finds a job as a secretary at the Lubbock Avalanche Journal. However she is discovered by an editor by accident when she is writing witty tidbits about cotton from the perspective of an insect. This allows her to keep in touch with her father because the two could have more in common.
