120 Classic Short Films (60 Minutes or Less)
Top: Amblin', Un Chien Andalou, Wavelength
Middle: Entr'acte, The Music Box, Les Mistons
Bottom: Luxo Jr., La Jetee, Dimensions of Dialogue
For this
list I looked at a number of different areas - historically important early
silents, silent comedy, silent art films, later art films, cartoons,
documentaries, apprentice works by major directors, oscar winning short films,
and so on - and tried to cherry-pick the very best examples of each. I’ve
included some works made for television - like Peter Watkins’ The War Game -
but only if they have a repuation in the world of cinema and are sometimes discussed
in academic film books. I was tempted to include Michael Jackson's Thriller,
directed by John Landis, which sometimes makes it onto lists of short films,
but then if I did that 100 other music videos would have to be considered, so I
left it out.
