Classics of Egyptian Art Recreated:  About the Originals

Illustration from Discoveries: Ancient Egypt (Barnes & Noble Books)

The full-color prints in the 'Re-creations'  series are restoration-copies of several great works

of Egyptian art.   We will never know the names of the artists who created these masterpieces,

but I have attempted to bring their work 'back to life' in the full color, clarity and brilliance

in which they were originally done.  Below are images of the original works on which the re-creations are based.

Ships of Hatshepsut's Punt Expedition: Granite relief at Deir El Bahri and a drawing by one of Napoleon's engineers.

Granite relief mural from Abu Simbel celebrating the victory of Ramesses II (the Great) at Quadesh.

Watercolor by Ippolito Rosellini on the Franco-Tuscan Expedition of 1828 - before the paint had flaked off.

Four Ladies at a banquet, from the tomb of the scribe Nebamun at Thebes.  Original now in British Museum.

Watercolor-sketch on right is by Rosellini.

Wooden chest with colored ivory panels featuring scenes of Tutankhamun and the young queen Ankhesenamun.

From Tut's tomb in the Valley of the Kings.  Now in the Eqyptian Museum at Cairo.
