The boy is the son of Horace and his wife.  Traveling is a metaphor for the boys attention disorder stemming from the lack of time spent with his father.  The setting for the back story is getting more recent as the boys past is more recent.  His travels are like his attempt at creating a happier place for himself.  (need to flesh this out)
