It's important to understand the mood, her psychological state as a 14 year old girl who is just beginning to understand what intimacy and affection are because boys "..are finally catching up to them."  She is also trying to navigate through all the new trials, tribulations, expectations and responsibilities placed upon her.  Like her mother, she must be valedictorian.  Like her mother, she must be a good Christian.  Like her mother, she must be a good homemaker.  Boys aren't important, they'll come later.  Beauty isn't important.  It's just meant to attract boys.  The home is what's important.  Young girls should learn cooking, quilting and preserving.  Likewise, the only music she should be interested in is classics like John Phillip Sousa or classical like Bach, Beethoven or Brahms.
