The first scene of the book shows Florence browsing through a magazine (not unlike the weekly reader).  She comes across an advertisement for “Sketch Friends International” an alternative to pen pals.  SFI’s goals are to spread the visual, artistic and cultural sense of people and places around the world through sketching.  The ad allows the applicant to receive a free sketchbook, pencil and watercolor set for a limited time offer.
