                    When I use my own images, the blur actually blurs the image instead of looking like a shape morphing. Do I need to mess with the threshold more? or will my images just not work?

                      Depends on the image itself, but remember to apply the threshold and blur in the right order and on to an adjustment layer to an image with no alpha channel. Let me know if it works.
