The brutality of the cathedral and the bazaar
One of the first sights Adam includes on his world architecture tour is St. Paul's Cathedral. While trying to navigate through the city is ends up in front of the Lloyds of London building. This is where he learns from Google that it is a landmark of high-tech iconoclastic architecture, a form that emphasized the components necessary for the structure and function of the building and rejected the traditional thinking that a building form was derived from an aesthetic exterior or shell. Adam is naturally disgusted by the building and likens it to a high-rise flea market or bazaar. His desire is to build a church that even non-Christians will want to visit. The beauty of the building must serve the Christian mission.
