Upton Sinclair

Upton Sinclair (born September 20, 1878) is best known for his 1906 landmark novel, The Jungle, in which he’d intended to illustrate the exploitation of immigrant workers in the meatpacking industry but instead managed to incite public disgust at the poor quality of processed meat (federal food-inspection laws were passed as a result). He wrote nearly 100 books during his career (Oil! inspired the movie There Will Be Blood), and he won the Pulitzer Prize in 1943 for Dragon’s Teeth, about the rise of Nazism in Germany.
