June 24, 1842: Writer Ambrose Bierce is best known for his Devil's Dictionary, a book of satirical definitions. The date of his death is unknown, because he disappeared while traveling through the South; one popular theory holds that he joined up with Pancho Villa's army and was later executed. Bierce was born 171 years ago today.
