Happy birthday, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o! The celebrated Kenyan novelist, playwright, essayist, academic, and social activist was born on January 5, 1938 when his country was under British rule. The struggle for independence, the transition to post-colonialism, and the inequalities in Kenyan society have been major themes in Ngũgĩ's writings. After imprisonment without charge in 1978, Ngũgĩ stopped writing in English and committed to writing in his native Gikuyu, calling on other African writers to also write in their native languages, a move that revolutionized the standing of African literature. He often tops the list of contenders for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
