Short Sentences

Four main types:

1. Equations with be.  
     "The streets were calm with Sunday." [Aimee Bender]
     "Nat was Nat." [Bernard Malamud], The Assistant, 130
     "So that was that." [Eric Ambler], Intrigue, 300

2. Equations with linking verbs.
     "War remains the decisive human failure." [John Kenneth Galbraith]

3. Intransitives.  The verb may or may not be followed by an adverbial modifier.
     "Autos honked.  Trees rustled.  People passed.  Arnie went out." [Langston Hughes]

4. Transitives.  The verb is followed by a noun phrase or a direct object.
     "Everyone has someone.  Except me."  [Carolyn See]
