There was no going back now.  Everyone expected me to make the jump.  Kirk even brought his jambox and started playing “Eye of the Tiger.”  Good thing they didn’t know how I really felt or else I'd be hearing the voice of Freddie Mercury screaming “Under Pressure” right now.  I could hear Wendy asking Greg, “What kind of stunt is he gonna do?”
“It’s only one of the hardest jumps out there,” Greg huffed.  “He bragged that he could pull off a better tabletop than Stoney Miller, one of the best BMX riders to have ever lived!"
Why did open my big mouth?  Why did I ever say I was better than Stoney Miller?  I sat on my bike and just stared at the six foot hight mound of dirt that stood about fifty yards ahead of me.  My tires were freshly pumped to a cushiony 40 psi.  My neck and handlebars were stiff as bricks.  All I had to do was race as fast as I could to that mound and lift my bike into the air.  Once I got high enough, I’d cross my handlebars and lay my bike flat, just like it was on a table.  I figured I could hold it for about a second at most before having to prepare for a safe landing.
I pressed the play button on my Walkman
