Florence is the epitome of Female White guilt struggling to be seen as an equal to White men.

She ran from her home because it couldn’t support her and without it, the world wouldn’t give her a chance.

She lost faith when she didn’t get an A in home economics.  What dish requires attention to detail?

This led to her GPA dropping by half a point.  She lost her nomination as valedictorian.

Her family sold their home in Lamesa and moved to Lubbock so that they could support her in college.  It was hard on her younger brother.  He rejected school and joined the army.

The sales from their home allowed them to purchase a modest home in Lubbock.  However the financial situation was like walking a tightrope.  Her mother was out of work and unable to get a job.   Her father was retired.  His retirement pay wasn’t enough, so Florence had to work.  She started working evenings at the movie theater so that she could still attend class during the day.

What made her leave home and try to live in an apartment?

Did she enjoy living on her own?

How did she lose her student status?

She eventually finds a job as a secretary but tells her father a lie about the position so he won’t feel ashamed.

She starts to feel school slipping away because she doesn’t have enough money for tuition and room/board.

That summer, she runs into the librarian’s son.  He’s home for the holidays and wants to catch up on old times over coffee.  They have coffee at a local diner and the conversation is quite pleasant.  He asks if she’d like to go to the movies Friday night but she has to decline because she working (at the movies).

How does he get her back to her apartment?  How does she avoid a very horrible situation.
