Watercolour on paper is a popular motion graphics style and I’ve turned to stock footage on more than one occasion for that look. It is possible though to create this look in After Effects, and for my latest experiment while playing with the Foam and Turbulent Displace effects I started zeroing in on a watercolour look, that while still rough is pretty convincing.

So for Experiment 11 we’re going to concentrate on watercolour looks and this time I’m going to offer my project file as a starting point if you need it. See if you can improve on mine or start from scratch using your own selection of effects. The object here is to make convincing watercolour looks using only standard After Effects tools. Post a JPG or a link to a movie in the comments. We may even collect the best and make them available as a download.  Download Project

Used with CC Glue Gun, Roughen Edges, Turbulent Displace and CC Vector Blur.

Looking good Joe. What might make this even better is if you can get more blend between the colours, with areas of semi-transparency. That might not be possible with a single layer but if you duplicate and combine with blend modes that could do it. Best, John.

Love it! Wonderful job John. Perfect for getting my AE feet wet again. Or at least inky…..

Good stuff Cendrick, it would be nice to see it a little more faded and on a lighter texture too.

    Hello John,

Great experiment. AE has so many effects and tools and so easy to slip over them. It is really efficient to learn like that and get familiar with different FXs and techniques.

I hope you will keep them coming!

    Thank you!

Looks good Misi, especially on the textured background. How did you get the edges to be brighter in the blue areas?

    Hello John,

Great to hear that! Thank you!

It is the nature of the Foam Fx render, Orange and soda, plus it is applied with overlay transparency on the blueish background with a really extreme curve setting that crushed the too orange and purple vivid, vibrant colours into something less saturated and toned.
