This appears to be the first letter after a break in their correspondence.  Samir was in college when Letha was in high school so by now he is working and may be courting Magda.

She admits that she had no hope that we would write her again, but appreciates his friendship more than ever now that he has written her. She's been living with Kay's family (not her own) and has recently moved to an apartment of her own.  Kay teased her for not being prepared to serve breakfast the following morning and her shoddy housekeeping.  Letha laughed it off and simply told her "I'm a Beatnik." She tells him that she may never be able to fix the apartment the way she likes because she has to work two jobs.  She is a secretary at the High Plains Underground Water Conservation District (the water company for those who want to drill irrigation wells) during the day, and at night she is works at the concession stand at the Lindsay Theater.  She claims that she needs new interests.

For three years I have been desperately in love with someone who doesn't truly love anything but music.  However, I need more than music.  So I have made up my mind to resume unobtrusively a rather normal life again, to keep myself busy with as many things as possible, and - maybe - to fall not-so-desperately in love with someone else.

Mentions that she's planning on sending him three books: This Fiery Night, Kingsblood Royal and a book about American Poetry.

It is the first year she gets to vote [e.g. decide for herself] and she intends on asking millions of questions.

I don't know how to answer "how is your Egyptian correspondent because I have no Egyptian correspondent, or any correspondent at all, except you.  So how are you? - then I can answer.
