Iris immediately fell to her hands and knees in search of the fallen eye. The magic eye was the only thing that could lead her out of the tunnel and back to the corner of Cypress and Middle Crescent. And that fluttering thing, whatever it was, was still squeaking above her head. Iris talking to herself in hopes of making it go away.
"Now what was Miss Sepdet saying? And why was she waving to me?"
Iris probed the surface of the floor with her hands.
"Come on Iris. It's not real. Just ignore it."
She fought her fear and desperately scoured the floor until she felt it's glossy round surface. She picked it up, but cut her finger on a crack that now appeared along it's surface.
"Oh no. It’s broken. Hera is going to kill me."
She tried looking through it to find Miss Sepdet but couldn't see anything. Instead the eye started to make a sound. It started to scream. It was Miss Sepdet’s voice. Her voice sounded choppy and her words broke up like the songs that came from her mother's radio.
“What did I do? Why is Miss Sepdet screaming?”
She tried turning the eye until she found a clear view.
"It's better now. I just have to turn it sideways to see clearly."
"Ka’aak. ka’aak. Ka’aak,” The squeaks turned into loud cawing that pierced her ears.
Suddenly a large bird appeared through the magic eye. But before she could react, it snatched the magic eye out of her hand and flew off into the darkness of the tunnel.
“
A few seconds later her eyes finally adjusted. saw that the opening at the other end was gone.
Mrs. Sepdet was screaming at her.
