Edward Bulwer-Lytton

English novelist Edward Bulwer-Lytton (born May 25, 1803) crafted many admirable opening lines during his lifetime, but he's most remembereed (and most mocked) for how he began his 1830 novel, Paul Clifford: "It was a dark and stormy night."
