Happy birthday, Lorrie Moore! She wrote about the agonizing struggle of becoming a writer (in a short story appropriately titled "How to Become a Writer"), but her own path seemed much less difficult. At the age of 19, she received national recognition for winning Seventeen magazine's fiction competition.
