Mildred D. Taylor (born September 13, 1943) is the author of historical fiction for children focusing on the struggles of African American families living in the Deep South. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry won the Newbery Medal in 1977; in 2003, she was the first recipient of the NSK Neustadt Prize for Children’s Literature. Early on she worked with the Peace Corps in Ethiopia, earned a master’s degree in journalism, and paid close attention to family stories of racism—many of which found their way into her books.
