April 26, 1336: On this day, Italian poet Petrarch climbed to the top of Mont Ventoux, a 1,912-meter summit. He proudly declared he was the first person to enjoy the view atop the mountain in hundreds of years, but modern scholars are skeptical of the poet's boastful claims.
