To love is good, too: love being difficult. For one human being to love another: that is perhaps the most difficult of all our tasks, the ultimate, the last test and proof, the work for which all other work is but preparation.
As a young cadet at a military academy, Franz Xaver Kappus wrote a letter to poet Rainer Maria Rilke (born December 4, 1875), one of the school's former students, asking for advice. Kappus later gathered Rilke's correspondence in a book, Letters to a Young Poet.
