Happy birthday, Ntozake Shange! After years of enduring racism and struggling through depression, the American playwright and poet (born Paulette L. Williams on October 18, 1948) changed her name—Ntozake means “she who has her own things” in Xhosa, and Shange means “she who walks with lions” in Zulu.
