September 29, 1547: Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was 58 when his novel, Don Quixote, was published. Before that he served in the Spanish Navy, was captured and enslaved by Algerian pirates, did a stint as a tax collector, and was jailed for embezzlement. He was born near Madrid, 466 years ago today.
