Nigerian novelist Chinua Achebe (born November 16, 1930) almost lost his iconic novel, Things Fall Apart, before it was published. In 1957 he sent his handwritten manuscript to a London typing service and didn't hear back for months. When a Nigerian colleague traveled to London, she stopped by the offices and found it abandoned in a corner. It was his only copy.
