March 5, 1046: On this day, Persian poet and philosopher Nasir Khusraw began a seven-year pilgrimage. Leaving his job and loved ones behind, he traveled through the Middle East, stopping in Mecca four times. Khusraw later wrote about the incredible experience in his memoir, Safarnama—or Book of Travels.
