Mae Jemison (born October 17, 1956) is the first African American woman to become an astronaut, orbiting Earth in the space shuttle Endeavour in 1992. She’s also a trained physician, earning a medical degree from Cornell University and working as a medical officer with the Peace Corps in West Africa. She’s written books on science (Discovering New Planets, Journey Through Our Solar System, Exploring Our Sun) in addition to an autobiography, Find Where the Wind Goes: Moments from My Life.
