Nora's optimism was cultivated from a family environment that rewarded discipline and faith.  The devoutly consistent followers would see blessings in the afterlife. 

In addition to that, Nora spent a significant part of her formative years witnessing the development of women's suffrage movement in Texas.  It made a lasting impression on her and was the decisive factor in her decision to get her master's degree and become a teacher.
