I have seen this image all over myspace and facebook. I think that street art is beautiful and unique in its own way, and should stay on the street. It’s not fair to the original artist, who took time to create this stencil graffiti, to have other people do “knock-off” creations to sell shirts and other things with similar pieces on it. Just because it’s public art, doesn’t mean it’s “free” for people to steal. Does a public art show make all those works free to take and use for your own compensation? No. This makes it hard for people to identify the original and stolen pieces – if I were the artist I’d be pissed! It’s just like an orange Poppy on the side of the road – it’s beautiful to look at, and is for anyone walking by to enjoy, but you still can’t pick it.
I think this is a very interesting topic. I personally LOVE looking at street art in the city. It is a fun and free thing to do to just drive to the city and look around for fun street art. It is a way for people to express themselves and I think as long as it is done in a polite way and it is not something offensive or is destructive to someone’s property it should be allowed. Obviously it is not as easy as that and there definitely would need to be some rules about it but with street art, people are able to appreciate art even when they were not planning on it because they are able to just walk or drive by it on their way to somewhere else but it still makes them think and allows them to appreciate someone else’s artwork.
