This is the 8×10 flatbed camera that I built getting encouragement and ideas from J. Grepstadt.

Great looking camera, kudos to a job well done. I built a 4×5 out of cherry a few years back and I’m looking to build a 8×10. How did u establish your deminsions? My thought was to get the bellows and a film holder and build around them. What do you think? Cordially Greg

Yes, that’s the right way definitely. If I should do it again I would buy a bellows (ebay or something) and get hold of a film holder to make things a little bit easier. It was a really lengthy job with some false paths. Anyway I use it, not everyday, but I can’t give up the greater quality of negatives.

Hello there! I’m thinking of building an 8X10 for wet plate photography! would it still be valid to get a film holder first and build around it? or you suggest a different approach?
P.S. I am new into this whole thing from large format cameras to wet plate but this is more of a fun excercise to me and I don’t want to spend a fortune on getting into it. Thanks

My first approach to large format photography was starting from the two standards … and I ended up with not enough space for the film holder! I had to build a custom film holder to use the camera. That’s why my second approach was to buy a standard commercial film holder and re-design the camera around it. So if you are going to use custom film holders, you may start from the bellows (be careful because making a bellows is a very difficult task, again if you buy a used bellows … better start from the real dimensions of the bellows).
