Hasselblad Square Instant Film Back Lets Your Camera Use Instax Square
Hot on the heels of the Rezivot Instant Film Back Kickstarter is this brand new one: it’s called the Hasselblad Square Instant Film Back. It does pretty much exactly what it says it does. The back, which is looking for funding on Kickstarter, is a plastic, 3D printed back that takes Fujifilm Instax Square film and attaches to your Hasselblad V medium format camera. The Hasselblad Square Instant Film Back has a manual wind system, so that means no batteries are involved and that cuts down the cost of the back over time. It’s a fantastic option for photographers who want to use an Instax back or Instax film with their Hasselblad V camera.
What the Kickstarter for the Hasselblad Square Instant Film Back is keen to mention though is a fact that I’ve known for a long time, the Instax Square imaging area is larger than 6×6 square format. 120 format that shoots square is 56mm while with Instax square, the imaging area is 62mm. So like the older images that were shot on Fujifilm Instant 100-C and 3000-B film, there is going to be a ton of black area. However, with the Instax Square format there is a much smaller amount comparatively.
Here’s what they say about the manufacturing process which will require an injection mold:
“Injection molded from ABS/PP blend with stainless steel rollers, we need £51000 to make it to production (the rest is shipping and kickstarter’s fee) . Tools for injection molded plastics are really expensive! There are 6 of them, mostly multi cavity, required to make this a reality. There’s also tooling for one custom sheet metal spring and the rest are off the shelf parts (screws, a torsion spring and a few tension springs).”
Alexander Dobble, who is the project’s creator, sent us an email to tell us that there will be a stretch goal for the Mamiya RB67 camera–which is a personal dream of mine.
